Mānuka oil is a popular ingredient in skincare, therapeutics, aromatherapy and consumer products. In every day skincare products, mānuka oil works as a full treatment, first, helping maintain a balanced skin microbiome by killing or reducing bacterial and fungal growth, reducing sun damage and skin inflammation that lead to premature aging, moisturising, protecting and calming the skin, promoting skin collagen that helps improve skin structure and integrity and erasing any blemishes while reducing scarring.
Typical Uses
- Mānuka oil’s powerful antimicrobial properties make it an ideal ingredient for use in topical therapeutics for antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral infections, oral care, feminine hygiene products, veterinary formulations and infection control products such as skin, hand and surface sanitisers.
- Given its wound healing and skin calming properties, mānuka oil is used in treatments for cuts, burns, sunburn, insect bites, chapped lips, broken cuticles etc.,
- Given its anti-inflammatory and skin barrier repair properties, mānuka oil is used in eczema and psoriasis
- Mānuka oil is highly effective against acne bacteria Cutibacterium acnes and is a suitable ingredient for acne and maskne skincare and therapeutics.
- Since mānuka oil has excellent anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and collagen production properties, it is an ideal antiaging ingredient in moisturisers, oils, serums, cleansers etc.

Grading
Mānuka oil is available as a graded product using the MβTK™ rating system and quality mark that refers to the level of natural b-triketones in mānuka oil from the East Cape region. The MβTK™ rating refers to the percentage of b-triketones in the mānuka oil, which correlates with the antimicrobial activity of the oil. For example, MβTK™ 20+ indicates that the mānuka oil with this rating is β-triketone-rich, with at least 20% β-triketones.
Formulation Directions
Dilute the mānuka oil with a carrier oil before applying topically.
- Skincare, acne, maskne: 0.5 – 1%
- Dermatological therapeutics: 1 – 2%
- Oral care: 0.2-0.5%
- Personal care and sanitisation products: 0.2 – 1%
- Consumer products: 0.2-2%
- Aromatherapy: 2 – 5 drops, alone or with other oils in a diffuser
Other Oils
- Blends well with carrier oils such as jojoba, sweet almond and rosehip.
- Compatible with essential oils such as basil, bergamot, calendula, cedarwood, chamomile, lemon (cochin) grass, cypress, eucalyptus, geranium, grapefruit, kakadu plum, lavender, marjoram, nutmeg, orange, patchouli, peppermint, pine, rosehip, rosemary, sandalwood, tea tree, thyme and more.
